How to calculate earthwork quantities with cut, fill, elevation and field checks
Earthwork quantity is not only area times depth. Existing surface, design plane, boundary and control points matter.
Field takeaways
- Earthwork needs existing surface, target level and boundary.
- Area times depth is only a rough estimate.
- Variable terrain needs a surface model or enough elevation points.
- Phone data is for reconnaissance; controlled survey is for quantity delivery.
- MapLab Survey keeps polygon, elevation, notes and reports together.
The pre-survey is mandatory
Without an original surface there is no calculation, only negotiation. Half an hour before the machines arrive prevents weeks of argument later.
Measure in stages
On long excavations, survey in sections. Three partial measurements are easier to defend than a single figure at the end.
Geometry versus trucks
Geometric volume is not hauled volume: material bulks when excavated and compacts when placed. That factor belongs in the contract, not in the geometry.
When the numbers disagree
Compare the surfaces, not the totals. Differences almost always come from a different reference surface or a different calculation boundary.

MapLab Survey handles RTK/GNSS point capture, drawing, area and volume calculations and coordinate conversion, then exports to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, NCZ or CSV. Capture, calculation and export work offline. Live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need a connection.
Frequently asked questions
How is earthwork calculated?
By comparing existing and target surfaces inside a boundary.
Is area times depth enough?
Only as a rough estimate.
Does CRS and elevation reference matter?
Yes.
Can MapLab Survey help?
Yes, with field boundary, notes and reports.
