How to find a parcel corner: map line, legal boundary and field reality

Finding a parcel corner is not just following a line on a phone. The line on the map, a fence, an old stake, occupation on the ground and cadastral record may not agree.

Field takeaways

  • Parcel query and KML are useful for navigation and preliminary checks, not for declaring a legal boundary.
  • Old ED50 data, TUREF measurements and WGS84 KML must not be mixed without understanding the CRS.
  • Phone GPS can guide you near the parcel, but corner setting needs RTK, control and professional authority.
  • A fence, wall or old stake is field evidence, not automatically a cadastral boundary.
  • MapLab Survey organizes parcel layers, notes, photos and exports; it does not replace official cadastral procedures.

Start with the right intent

Parcel lines are useful for reaching the site, checking occupation and planning field work. They should not be treated as a legal boundary declaration on their own. Official boundary work belongs to the authorized cadastral process.

Why the line may not fit the ground

Old maps may use ED50, modern GNSS observations may use TUREF, and KML expects WGS84 geographic coordinates. If those systems are mixed carelessly, the line can appear shifted. Field evidence such as fences, walls and old stakes must also be interpreted carefully.

A practical workflow

Find the parcel from a reliable source, import it as a reference layer, check the CRS, photograph field evidence and keep your own observations in a separate layer. Use RTK and professional control for critical corner work.

Measure, check and deliver in the right format.

MapLab Survey is a mobile field app for RTK/GNSS points, drawings, area/volume calculations, coordinate conversion and export to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON and CSV. Capture, calculation and export can work offline; live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

Is the parcel line on screen a legal boundary?

Not by itself. Legal boundary work requires the authorized cadastral process.

Can a phone find a parcel corner?

It can guide you near the corner, but precise setting needs RTK, control and professional authority.

Why does a KML parcel appear shifted?

CRS transformation, coordinate order, old datum or generalized data may cause visible offsets.

Does MapLab Survey define legal parcel boundaries?

No. It organizes parcel reference layers and field records.
