Plan and profile together
A pipeline is designed in two dimensions at once. Measuring only the line in plan leaves out exactly the information that decides whether water flows or stands.
The crossings are the expensive points
Where the route crosses a road, a watercourse or a buried utility, take more detail, a photo and a note. Those are the locations that generate variation orders.
Record before the trench
Survey the existing ground before excavation. Once the trench is open that state cannot be recovered, and it is usually what the quantities are based on. After the pipe is laid and before backfill, record its centreline and invert level at the key points: that is the only record the operator will have in five years.
