Offline field surveying: how to work when the site has no internet

Assuming internet exists everywhere is an office habit. Valleys, basements, mines, rural parcels and dense concrete sites can break the connection. A good field workflow keeps the job moving.

Field takeaways

  • GNSS positioning does not require internet by itself.
  • Live NTRIP corrections, online basemaps, cloud sync and geocoding need connectivity.
  • Prepare project files, CRS, receiver pairing, basemap and export plan before leaving.
  • For critical RTK without internet, plan local base, PPK or repeat checks later.
  • Do not leave the only copy on the device at the end of the day.

What needs internet?

GNSS positioning itself comes from satellites. Live RTK corrections through NTRIP, online basemaps, search, team sync and cloud backup need internet.

When the connection drops, MapLab Survey can continue recording, drawing, measuring and exporting. Critical cm-level RTK work still needs a correction and control strategy.

Before leaving the office

  • Select and test the project CRS.
  • Pair the external receiver and check batteries, pole and antenna height.
  • Load parcel KML, design DXF or old survey data on the device.
  • Prepare offline basemaps or reference files where needed.
  • Decide the delivery format before the end of the day.

When connection drops

Separate reconnaissance from critical measurement. Notes and rough area checks can continue. Cadastre checks, stake-out and precise elevation work should wait for corrections or use local base/PPK workflows.

In the field · MapLab Survey

Measure, check and deliver in the right format.

MapLab Survey is a mobile field app for RTK/GNSS points, drawings, area/volume calculations, coordinate conversion and export to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON and CSV. Capture, calculation and export can work offline; live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need connectivity.

Frequently asked questions

Does GNSS work without internet?

Yes. Satellite positioning does not need internet; live RTK corrections and online maps do.

Can MapLab Survey work offline?

Recording, drawing, calculations and export can continue offline.

What if NTRIP drops?

Do not record critical points. Restore corrections, use local base/PPK or repeat later.

What is the key preparation?

Test project files, CRS, receiver connection and backup before leaving.
