The hidden cost of importing
Import a DXF just to check it and every layer, block and text label in that file is now part of your project. If you work out ten minutes later that it was the wrong revision, cleaning up takes longer than opening did. The viewer skips that step: the file opens on its own canvas and your project stays exactly as it was.
Layer names and colours, as they were drawn
In Autodesk's DXF reference, layer information travels alongside the objects; the software reading it can preserve that or flatten it. The viewer preserves it, so names like "stakeout", "existing_detail" or "boundary" and the colours from the drawing appear on screen unchanged. In the field you are not guessing which line was which. Netcad NCZ files open the same way, with no conversion to DXF first.
Without snapping, measuring is guessing
Touching the end of a line on a phone screen misses by a few pixels, and a few pixels can be metres on the ground. Endpoint, midpoint and edge snapping pull the cursor to the real node of the geometry. When you measure between two points with the crosshair, the number you read is the drawing's own number, not wherever your finger landed.
You decide what reaches the map
You can draw points, lines and areas over the drawing, and only what you select is sent to the map. In practice that means taking three stake-out points out of a zoning plan carrying hundreds of thousands of objects and walking out with just those. Your project file stays light and the phone stays responsive.
What BETA means here
The feature is marked BETA in the app. Very large files, unusual DXF versions or badly written blocks can still produce unexpected results. Before anything critical, check the drawing against a known control point — good practice whether or not a feature is in beta.
