Why perimeter gets measured

Almost always because somebody has to buy material: fencing, kerbing, cable or irrigation line. That makes accuracy a cost question, not an academic one.

Walking inflates the number

A boundary walked with GNSS carries small deviations that lengthen the perimeter. Drawing corner to corner gives a cleaner figure for a materials order.

Close the ring

An open polygon reports a perimeter that is missing its final side. Confirm the shape closes before reading the value.

Add for corners and slope

Order against the slope distance on rising ground, and add a margin at corners and gates where material is consumed faster than the drawing suggests.
