What a free field GIS app does and does not do

Knowing where a free app stops is more useful than hearing how good it is.

Field takeaways

  • Measurement, drawing and export are the core.
  • Coordinate-system support is what makes it a tool.
  • The receiver sets the accuracy, not the app.
  • Official filings still need a licensed professional.
  • Knowing the boundary makes the tool more trustworthy.

The core: measure, draw, export

Area, perimeter, distance, bearing and slope; points, lines and polygons; layer structure; photos and notes. This is the daily work of a field app, and whether it costs money changes none of it.

What turns it into a tool

Coordinate-system support and export. An app that converts between WGS84, UTM and local systems by EPSG code, and hands the result over as DXF, KML, GeoJSON, Shapefile or CSV, is usable. One that cannot do this is a map with a ruler on it.

The app does not supply the accuracy

The phone's own receiver gives metres; an external RTK GNSS receiver over Bluetooth gives centimetres. Both run through the same app, and the hardware makes the difference. That is why "how accurate is the app" has no answer on its own.

Where the boundary starts

Cadastral registration, legal boundary determination and signed engineering deliverables require a licensed professional. A free app does the field half of that work and not the legal half. An app that says so plainly is more trustworthy than one that does not.

What to expect

Everyday measurement, reconnaissance, checking, inventory, preparing a delivery package: all of it. A certified accuracy statement, official registration, enterprise data governance: no. The line is clear, and it is exactly the line worth looking at when you choose a tool.

In the field · MapLab Survey

Try these steps on your own phone.

MapLab Survey handles RTK/GNSS point capture, drawing, area and volume calculations and coordinate conversion, then exports to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, NCZ or CSV. Capture, calculation and export work offline. Live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need a connection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a free app enough for professional work?

For field measurement, checking and delivery yes; official registration still needs a licensed professional.

Does accuracy depend on the app?

No, on the receiver. Metres with a phone, centimetres with an external RTK receiver.

Which export formats matter?

At minimum DXF, KML and CSV; GeoJSON or Shapefile for the GIS side.

When do you need the paid tier?

When you need advanced analysis, richer reporting and professional workflows.
