What UTM is
UTM projects the curved earth onto a flat grid in six-degree zones, so positions can be written in metres instead of degrees. Easting runs east, northing runs north, and both are plain metres you can subtract.
The zone is part of the coordinate
The same easting and northing exist in every zone. A UTM pair without its zone number is ambiguous by hundreds of kilometres, which is the single most common way UTM data goes wrong.
Reading the numbers
Easting is always six digits and centred on 500,000 at the zone meridian. Northing is measured from the equator, so it grows to seven digits in the northern hemisphere.
Datum still matters
UTM on WGS84 and UTM on a national datum can differ by metres. Record both the zone and the datum.
