How to enter UTM coordinates and navigate to a point
Entering a UTM coordinate is simple, but wrong zone, wrong order or wrong datum can move the point far away.
Field takeaways
- UTM/TM coordinates need zone and datum information.
- Turkey commonly uses TUREF TM zones such as TM30, TM33, TM36 and TM45.
- Always check X/Y, E/N or easting/northing order.
- Do not mix ED50, TUREF and WGS84 without transformation notes.
- MapLab Survey supports coordinate navigation and field records.
The zone is part of the coordinate
Entering an easting and northing without the correct zone will place the target hundreds of kilometres away. Confirm the zone and the datum before you set off.
Navigate by distance and bearing
Use the distance readout as the primary guide rather than a route line. In the final metres walk slowly and steadily so the position settles.
Stop at the tolerance
Stop when you are inside the agreed tolerance, not when the display reads zero, and record the difference between target and achieved point.
Check the transformation
If the point lands somewhere implausible, suspect the zone or datum before you suspect the receiver.

MapLab Survey handles RTK/GNSS point capture, drawing, area and volume calculations and coordinate conversion, then exports to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, NCZ or CSV. Capture, calculation and export work offline. Live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need a connection.
Frequently asked questions
Can I enter UTM on a phone?
Yes, with correct zone and datum information.
How do I know X/Y order?
Check E/N or easting/northing notes and test with known control.
What is TUREF TM33?
A TUREF projected CRS used in Turkey, EPSG:5255.
Can ED50 be used as TUREF?
No, not without transformation.
