How to enter UTM coordinates and navigate to a point

Entering a UTM coordinate is simple, but wrong zone, wrong order or wrong datum can move the point far away.

Entering an easting and northing without the correct zone will place the target hundreds of kilometres away. Confirm the zone and the datum before you set off.

Navigate by distance and bearing

Use the distance readout as the primary guide rather than a route line. In the final metres walk slowly and steadily so the position settles.

Stop at the tolerance

Stop when you are inside the agreed tolerance, not when the display reads zero, and record the difference between target and achieved point.

Check the transformation

If the point lands somewhere implausible, suspect the zone or datum before you suspect the receiver.
