How to measure distance between two points with map, GPS, line and field checks

Three distances, one pair of points

Between two points there is the horizontal distance, the slope distance along the ground and the walking distance that goes around obstacles. Most apps report the first. On broken terrain the difference between them can exceed a fifth, so say which one you mean when you hand over a number.

Error works on both ends

If each point carries three metres of uncertainty, the distance can swing far more than the figure on screen suggests. Over short distances the relative error is largest, so measure twice and compare. If the two readings disagree, the conditions are the problem, not the app.

Buying by the metre

For fencing or cable, order against the slope distance, not the map distance, and add a margin for corners.
