Three distances, one pair of points
Between two points there is the horizontal distance, the slope distance along the ground, and the walking distance that goes around obstacles. Maps and CAD/GIS mostly work on the horizontal plane, and most apps report that figure. Treating the three as the same number produces errors in estimates and quantity takeoffs.

Horizontal against slope
On sloping ground the distance you walk on the surface differs from the horizontal projection, and on broken terrain the difference between them can exceed a fifth. When you hand over a number, say which distance it is — the person reading it cannot guess.
Error works on both ends
Each endpoint carries its own uncertainty. If both points hold three metres of it, the distance can swing far more than the figure on screen suggests, and over short distances the relative error is largest. Measure twice and compare; if the two readings disagree, the conditions are the problem, not the app.
Buying by the metre
For fencing or cable, order against the slope distance, not the map distance, and add a margin for corners and gates. Writing the distance type into the report is your only defence when the order is questioned later.
