You are measuring the image
A distance drawn on a map is measured on whatever the map shows. If the imagery is shifted or several years old, the measurement inherits that error without warning.
Flat map, sloping ground
Map distance is horizontal. On a slope the real walking or cable distance is longer, and that difference is paid for in material.
Good for planning, not for contracts
Use it to estimate a route, a fence run or a trip. For any figure that goes into a contract, the starting point has to be a field measurement.
