The current frame: ETRS89 and three zones

Spain's official datum is ETRS89 and production runs in UTM. The mainland spans three zones: 29N in the west, 30N in the centre (EPSG 25830), 31N along the Mediterranean coast. A project can straddle a zone boundary; which zone the delivery uses should be decided up front.

ED50: a hundred-metre legacy

Older topographic maps and plenty of archived plans sit in ED50. The gap between ED50 and ETRS89 in Spain is roughly a hundred metres — visible to the naked eye and fatal to a delivery. Everyone who reads a coordinate off an old map and compares it with today's GPS fix meets that gap once; not meeting it twice is a matter of asking the datum question.

The Canary Islands use a frame separate from the peninsula. Mainland assumptions do not carry over; work there uses the systems the catalogue lists for the islands.
