What a contour is
A contour joins points of equal elevation. Closely spaced lines mean steep ground, widely spaced lines mean flat. Reading that spacing is most of what contours are for.
Interval sets the detail
A one-metre interval shows terraces and ditches; a five-metre interval shows only the general shape. State the interval whenever you present contours, or they cannot be interpreted.
They come from a surface
Contours are computed from elevation points, so they inherit the accuracy and the gaps of that data. Smooth lines do not mean accurate lines.
Check them on the ground
Walk one or two lines and compare with what you see. Contours generated from coarse global data often miss features that matter on site.
