What a contour is
A contour joins points of equal elevation. Closely spaced lines mean steep ground; widely spaced lines mean flat. Reading that spacing is most of what contours are for. A line that closes on itself encloses a summit or a hollow — the elevation values tell you which.
Interval sets the detail
A one-metre interval shows terraces and ditches; a five-metre interval shows only the general shape. State the interval whenever you present contours, or they cannot be interpreted.
Reading water from the lines
Water runs from high to low. Where contours cross a stream line they bend into a V, and the V's direction together with the elevation values helps read the flow. That interpretation is valuable for drainage reconnaissance — but any decision that enters a design needs surveyed levels and hydraulic calculation.
They come from a surface
Contours are computed from elevation data, so they inherit the accuracy and the gaps of that data. Smooth lines do not mean accurate lines, and contours generated from coarse global data often miss the features that matter on site.
Check them on the ground
Open the contours over the working area, then compare them with the line you actually walk. Roads, terraces, fresh fill, excavations and building surroundings may not be current in the elevation data. Walk one or two lines and compare with what you see; support the interpretation with photos, notes and, where needed, RTK or total station measurements.
