Why parcel lines shift in the field: cadastral data, GPS and legal boundary
A parcel line shifting on a phone does not automatically mean the parcel is wrong. Data source, transformation, basemap and GPS accuracy all matter.
Field takeaways
- Parcel query data is useful for navigation, not a legal stake-out by itself.
- Phone GPS error and cadastral data differences should not be confused.
- Satellite imagery is not a coordinate accuracy guarantee.
- Old maps, ED50 and TUREF transformation may affect lines.
- MapLab Survey helps compare parcel layers with field notes and observations.
Do not decide from imagery alone
Satellite imagery may look clear, but that does not mean every pixel is positioned with centimetre accuracy. Imagery offset, old acquisition dates, shadows, seasonal field marks or old occupation lines can easily be confused with parcel boundaries.
Legal warning
Seeing a parcel line on a phone is a useful start for field orientation. It does not replace official cadastral procedure, boundary stake-out or the work of an authorized survey professional when ownership boundaries, disputes, fencing or building setbacks are involved.
Using MapLab Survey correctly
- Add the parcel as a separate reference layer.
- Record the boundary you actually walk as a separate measurement layer.
- Add photo notes to corners or lines that look different in the field.
- Write down the coordinate system and file source.
- Use the record as technical pre-check evidence when an official decision is required.
Measure, check and deliver in the right format.
MapLab Survey is a mobile field app for RTK/GNSS points, drawings, area/volume calculations, coordinate conversion and export to DXF, KML/KMZ, GeoJSON and CSV. Capture, calculation and export can work offline; live NTRIP corrections and online basemaps need connectivity.
