Walk it or draw it
Walking the boundary captures the reality of the ground; drawing on the map is faster and cleaner. For estimating fencing material the second is usually enough.

A track walked with GPS contains small deviations that lengthen the perimeter. If you are buying by the metre, review the line before accepting the figure.
From perimeter to a materials list
Convert the perimeter into post count by dividing by the chosen spacing, then add a post at every corner and gate. Counting posts from length alone always leaves the corners short, and corners carry the most tension.
