Area and perimeter answer different questions
A field can be 12 decares in area and 480 metres around, and the two figures serve different jobs. Area drives planting plans and value calculations; perimeter drives fencing, ditching, roadside and maintenance-line quantities. Quoting the area to someone pricing a fence is the right number for the wrong question.
Walk it or draw it
Walking the boundary captures the reality of the ground; drawing the polygon on the map is faster and cleaner. For a fencing estimate the drawing is usually enough — walk it when the used boundary has drifted away from the mapped line.
